Intermingled among the pines and barren mountain sides, the Sierra National Forest has 12 off-highway vehicle (OHV) routes for the four-wheel drive enthusiast. These rugged and sometimes precarious trails takes the traveler deep into National Forest lands for access to remote high-country lakes, mountains and trailheads. Ranging in length from 1.5 to 30 miles and located at elevations of 1,700 to 10,000 feet, all OHV routes are closed after deer hunting season to protect them from serious erosion that might occur during wet weather. All vehicles must have an approved spark arrestor and exhaust system.

State Highway 41 Region
Hite Cove OHV Route

This 5-mile, Class B route traverses a variety of terrain as its elevations range from 3,900 to 1,700 feet in the northwest region of the Sierra National Forest near the Jerseydale Forest Station. The route consists of mixed conifer, Black and Live Oak, scattered brush and grass, and an abundance of Poison Oak throughout the area. Springtime heralds the bringing of a spectacular show of wild flowers of several varieties.

Star Lakes OHV Route
Pickups with long wheelbases are not recommended for this Class C, 2.2 mile route that brings the four-wheeler within a 10-minute walk of Star Lakes. Elevations range from 7,200 to 8,400 feet in a true fir forest. The trail was cut in the mid-1940s to access the remote hunting and fishing in that area. Located approximately 14 miles off State Highway 41, east of Fish Camp.

Iron Lakes OHV Route
You will enjoy a breathtaking setting of sheer cliffs, rocky ridges and a fir/lodgepole forest on this 1.5 mile, Class B route. You will have a half-mile walk to the lake because the trail "drops off" the ridge and stops short of the lakeshore. Located 16 miles from State Highway 41 on Jackson Road.

Shuteye Peak OHV Route
Located off Central Camp Road and Forest Service Road 6S59, above Bass Lake, this route begins at an elevation of ???? feet and ends at the Shuteye Peak Permanent Lookout Station at 8,351 feet. This two mile, Class A route is an excellent opportunity beginners or those testing out a new vehicle.

Green and Cattle Mountain OHV Route
A Class A, two mile route that borders the Ansel Adams Wilderness is located near the Clover Meadow Forest Station off Beasore Road. Elevations range from 5,000 to 7,500 feet and it is a popular deer hunting destination.

State Highway 168
Red Lake/Coyote Lake OHV Route
West Lake/Strawberry Lake OHV Route

East of State Highway 168 on Forest Service Road 8S10, both routes fork off in different direction and different difficulty scales. The entire length of the Red/Coyote Lake route is 3.5 miles and is rated Class B; however, travel becomes more difficult beyond Red Lake. West/Strawberry Lake route is rated as Class A and is two miles in length. Both routes travel to pristine, high-country lakes that hug the Dinkey Creek Wilderness Area.

Dinkey Creek Road Area
Brewer OHV Route

Even if you don't catch the "big one," you'll see excellent backcountry scenery and experience wilderness-like solitude on this 3.5 mile, Class A trail. Located off Rock Creek Road, Brewer climbs the dividing line between the Kings River and Pineridge Ranger Districts along Foster Ridge. This route is truly a diversity of dense Red Fir forest to dry, barren open-spaces. The route "drops off" the ridge and stops short of the lakeshore, where many campsites are dispersed along the lakeshore.

Bald Mountain OHV Route
Also off Rock Creek Road is the Bald Mountain route which leads to the abandoned Bald Mountain Lookout Station. This three mile, Class A route steadily climbs dirt trails and granite slabs to the lookout station at 7,832 feet.

Swamp Lake OHV Route
Accessible by both Exchequer Meadow and Willow Meadow west of Dinkey Creek, this route traverses a variety of terrain and access three backcountry lakes. Access to Swamp Lake, via Willow Meadow, is 11 miles and is rated Class B. Taking the route from Exchequer Meadow is 7 miles, passes Hatch, Mud and Grouse Lakes, and is rated as Class C. As you ascend the boulder strewn trail from Exchequer Meadow, the Red Fir virgin forest thins out and yields its hold to lodgepole pines and displays the awesome canyons of the Kings River to the south. To the east and across Ruby Creek, the imposing, blocky, granite summit of 10,218 foot Nelson Mountain dominates the scene. From the Willow Meadow point of entry, the trail is Class B for for one mile, then turns to a very difficult Class C.

Dusy/Ershim OHV Route
Perhaps the hallmark of the Sierra National Forest's 12 OHV routes, Dusy/Ershim traverses some of the most spectacular features of the forest as it winds through its 30-mile corridor between the Dinkey Creek and John Muir Wilderness areas. Its traditional trailhead begins at Courtright Reservoir and ventures three miles to Voyager Rock Campground. Thereafter, the trail deteriorates to a very difficult Class C that takes a minimum of two days to travel its entire length to Kaiser Pass Road, above Huntington Lake. The "Mason Dixon" line of the Dusy/Ershim route is the 50 degree-angle Chicken Rock and it has humbled many a driver with a vehicle lacking adequate horsepower. Take your time, drive cautiously and you'll probably make it without any problems.

Spanish OHV Route
Spanish is the final OHV route in the Sierra National Forest and is a Class C, 4.5 mile trek with a 30-minute walk to Spanish Lakes. Located off the Crown Valley Trailhead below Wishon Dam, this route begins humbly amongst young pines and becomes menacing at Radiator Rock, an obstacle that truly earns its name! The trail ends at the new John Muir Wilderness. The ridge to Spanish Mountain is an open, gentle hike to the 10,000-foot peak. From this vantage point, you can see large areas of the John Muir and Monarch Wilderness areas, Kings Canyon National Park and the junction of the Middle and South Forks of the Kings river more than 8,000 feet below.

Miami Creek OHV Area
Oakhurst, California
It's not the easiest trail system to find. We passed the small brown sign a few times before we finally found the entrance off Highway 41. Located near the towns of Oakhurst and Bass Lake, this off-road trail system is pure northern California forest. The thick smell of pine trees comes right through the windows of your tow rig.
Several staging areas are available, and some have pits for fires and grilling as well as established camp sites. Make sure you know the rules about fires and the risks of fire dangers in this often-dry forestland.
The trail riding ranges from packed and wide single tracks to narrow dirt bike style single track. Lots of winding, rolling trails are packed within a small area here. And nearly every trail is exciting. The scenery is awesome as well, with towering pines everywhere and a chance to spot wildlife too. Plus, it's just minutes from Yosemite National Park for non-motorized recreation. For trail maps of the Miami Creek OHV site:

Location Name: Pismo Dunes OHV
Type of Riding Place: Dunes
Location (closest city): Grover City, CA USA
Details: Approx. 2500 acres of dune running fun. Several small hill climbs (nothing like Glamis), Comp Hill is the most popular. Can be busy on holiday weekends. Best time to go is in the Fall. Summer brings fog and usually afternoon wind but is is rideable, (and fun) all year around.

Camping is available on the beach. You must have a vehicle that is capable of driving on sand in order to make it to the ride spot. And beware of one creek crossing. It can be treacherous during the rainy months and during high tide. There have been many a swamped vehicle with high tow out costs in this area. Even so, most duners bring their motor homes and trialers onto the beach. If you are unsure of how your vehicle will do, you can prepay one of the tow companies to take you in and back out. It is much cheaper than calling them after you get stuck. $7/night camping fee. Reservations can be made through MISTIX (800)444-7275 but are almost never necessary. Quad rentals are available through BJ Rentals (805) 481 5411. See Thanksgiving at Pismo for a past trip report.
How to get there:Located south of San Luis Obispo off of highway 101. Take the Grand Ave. Exit. and head west. Go about 10 blocks. Turn Left right after the train tracks onto highway 1. Turn Right on Pier Ave. This will lead you right to the park entrance.

Location Name: Black Springs Area - Stanislaus National Forest
Type of Riding Place: Trails
Location (closest city): N/A
Details: Uncrowded off-roading through pine and fir studed forests at 4,000-6,500ft. elevation. Area scenery ranges from high mountain vistas, to steep canyons w/ river crossings to beautiful meadows. Trails range from level semi-maintained dirt/gravel logging roads with 60mph sweeping turns to very difficult hill climbs with helmet sized and larger rocks and boulders strewn throughout. Area is VERY large with hundreds of miles of criss-crossing trails and fire roads and is easy to loose your bearings, even with a map. You can camp/ride all weekend and never see another soul.

Un-improved camping is permitted any where you find a spot, although a fire permit is required and I urge you to leave the area as you found it. Please Tread Lightly. No fees are required.

All offroad California Green Sticker vehicles are permitted, including winter un-groomed snowmobiling, providing they are equipped with a U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor/silencer.

Nearest gas and supplies are in Dorrington, approx.15 to 25 minutes away (depending on how far in to the forest you go)
How to get there: From Stockton take Hwy. 4 east through Angels Camp and Calavaras Big Trees. Everything north of the hwy between Dorrington and Lake Alpine Is legal Riding and Camping.

Location Name: Ione/Muddox Quarry - Amador County
Type of Riding Place: Trails
Location (closest city): N/A
Details: Approx 2,500 acres of rolling Sierra Nevada foothills with lower elevation sagebrush type landscape. The area is a mined out clay quarry. Numerous dirt roads and trails with small hillclimbs, jumps, and creek crossings ranging from beginning to medium skill levels. A great place to go ride on a weekend afternoon if you don't live more than 50 or so miles away.

Camping is not permitted, though public campgrounds are located nearby at Lake Camanche, Lake Amador, or Lake Pardee.

No Fees, however the land is owned by the Muddox Corporation which allows public, at-your-own-risk riding providing people don't dump their trash everywhere and act responsibly. In the 5 years I've been riding there, there has never been a problem. Gas and services in nearby Ione or Jackson.
How to get there: From Stockton, take Hwy 88 east toward Lake Tahoe. Approx 1 mile past the Ione turn-off, turn left at the blinking yellow light. (the only one around for miles) You can park anywhere around the area where the rail road tracks cross the road.
